Community Engagement at the Holden Center

For Campus and Community Organizations

Introduction

The Service-Learning Program values collaborative and mutually-beneficial relationships with our community partners aimed at community development and social justice. We believe that bringing together the energy and innovation of our students with the wisdom and experience of community partners is a powerful tool for social change and we are here to support the process along the way.

Community Partners may engage the SLP and UO students in a variety of ways. Please contact Leisha McParland, Community Relations Coordinator, at 541.346.4351 to find out more about potential opportunities for collaboration.
Host Students

Community engagement is an essential component of the the student experience; it's also an excellent opportunity for non-profits to bring in talented, eager students with great ideas and to build a pipeline of talent. The Service-Learning Program maintains an active database of community partners and service opportunities to assist students in their efforts towards engaged scholarship and experiential learning.

Become a Service Partner

The Service-Learning Program offers for-credit seminar courses in partnership with the Family and Human Services Department. Each course involves a weekly seminar and practicum in which the student serves at least 30 hours in the term. There are currently 4 seminars: K-12 Teaching, Human Services & Mentorship, Civic and Public Service, Outdoor School. New this year is the Global Citizenship Seminar, focused on exploring the emergence of global citizenship. Students receiving credit can be more accountable than less formal volunteers because they are receiving academic credit for their experience. Additionally, they have to complete certain assignments and maintain a formal placement agreement with the host organization.

Partners In Community Grant

Every winter the SLP offers grants to community nonprofits and agencies in the Eugene/Springfield area who work with UO students, faculty or staff on service learning projects or initiatives. The mission of the grant is to engage community organizations and students in learning together through service and civic engageme
