Community Engagement at the Holden Center

Academic Connections

Introduction

The SLP offers for-credit seminar courses through the Family and Human Services Department, which is one of the co-sponsors of the SLP. Each course involves a weekly seminar and practicum in which the student serves at least 30 hours in the term.Course topics range from teaching to civic engagement, focusing anywhere from local communities to global nations.
Service Learning Courses
SLP courses have two components: a weekly seminar that is two credits and a practicum for which students earn one credit for every 30 hours of service they do. There are five different seminars to choose from, depending on your volunteer interests. The SLP is able to offer classes because its a part of Family and Human Services in the College of Education, so the classes are FHS 407 and 409.

Forms and Handouts
Each seminar has gernal forms and handouts you will need to set up your internship. Make sure you check with your professor to see if these are the forms they want you to use before you fill them out.

Pre-Authorization for Outdoor School
In order to take the Outdoor School course you have to first get pre-authorized. This is a very simple process, all you have to do is email your name and ID number to serve@uoregon.edu and say you want to get pre-authorized. You can also stop by the SLP and tell a staff member in person.
