Volunteer Position

Opportunity Title Companion Volunteer

Theme
Health

Description
THIS POSITION INCLUDES time spent with specific consumers at Garden Place and also out in the community. Activities include learning the bus system, helping someone become more comfortable in the community, movies, coffee, board games, arts & crafts, or just lending a listening ear.

ONE OF THE MAJOR BENEFITS of this type of volunteerism is that the consumer is empowered through the presence of you-the volunteer-to live a more socially integrated life. A sad fact of mental illness is that often people simply want to isolate at home. Companion volunteers help our consumers feel less lonely while also becoming more socially connected and thus more independent

Types of Work

Dates and Times when volunteers are most needed
Between one and four hours per week, depending on the needs of the specific consumer that a volunteer is matched up with. The exact hours of this position are pretty flexible. Generally, any time between 10 AM and 8 PM any day of the week is possible, as long as the consumer agrees to meet with the volunteer at a given time.
Minimum Commitment Level Six Months
Limitations or Restrictions Someone who is able to consistently spend time with a specific consumer each week, over a period of at least six months. This individual should be a team player (i.e., be able to communicate well with Garden Place staff), patient, and fun to be around. In addition, a certain degree of independence is required since this volunteer would be doing outings in the community with a specific resident.
Background Check Needed Yes
