Opportunity Title SANA Needle Exchange Outreach Worker

Description
Injection drug users bring their used needles to the SANA van where we safely dispose of them and provide clean needles on a one-to-one exchange. On an average week, up to 11,000 needles are collected. SANA workers also offer confidential HIV testing and referrals to addiction treatment programs and other social services. Help reduce HIV and hepatitis transmission rates in our community while being part of the cutting edge of harm-reduction work.

Dates and Times when volunteers are most needed
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Friday afternoons.
Minimum Commitment Level Ten Weeks (One Quarter)
Limitations or Restrictions The SANA program welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds. The only requirement is a compassionate, non-judgmental heart and respect for the privacy of our clients. Extensive training is provided, so at least a three month commitment is required. Unfortunately, the law does not allow us to accept volunteers under age 18. BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL VOLUNTEERS WANTED

Mission
HIV Alliance exists to support individuals living with HIV/AIDS and prevent new infections. We come from a harm-reduction approach, meaning we support any incremental change that improves health for people living with HIV/AIDS and reduces the risk of contracting HIV Description: HIV Alliance provides community education and advocacy to promote awareness and understanding of HIV disease. Case Managers assist people living with HIV/AIDS in addressing their health holistically and connecting them to community resources. Prevention team members empower individuals through education and support to make incremental changes in their behavior to reduce the risk of contracting HIV.
